1st South African motorist to drive off in the Datsun GO

ROSSLYN, South Africa (14 October 2014) - Mr Nkosinathi Dlamini from Vereeniging today became the first person in South Africa to officially welcome the legendary Datsun brand back to South Africa.

Dlamini was the first person to place an order for the Datsun GO.

Des Fenner, General Manager of Datsun South Africa, said that traditionally one of the most anticipated events in the motor industry following the launch of a new vehicle is the wait to see which dealer would become the first to receive an order for a new model. 

“In the case of the Datsun GO, there is even more significance attached to the first purchase, as the order placed by Mr Dlamini also welcomes the Datsun brand back to South Africa.  The Star Datsun dealership in Vereeniging completed the first step in what for us is an exciting milestone in our journey to re-establish the Datsun name in South Africa.”

Says Mr Dlamini: “I went to Nissan looking to purchase a pre-owned vehicle but after seeing the Datsun GO, I knew I had to get it. It made sense. Datsun is a trusted brand and I was getting a brand new car - within my budget. After test driving the car, looking at its fuel consumption; the stability of the steering wheel; the car’s ability to turn in small spaces; the design of the front seat, the deal was sealed. I knew I had to invest in it for my family.” 

“We are delighted at Mr Dlamini’s positive response to the Datsun GO at this early stage of the vehicle’s introduction to the South African motoring scene,” said Fenner. “Despite officially going on sale only on October 20, we have received many enquiries and an unexpected amount of deposits – without people even seeing the actual vehicle. This we believe is an indication of the trust in the Datsun brand and the vehicle’s marketing plans getting into top gear. At an entry price of just R89 500 for the Mid Model and R99 500 for the Lux Model, Datsun is very proud to be keeping the Datsun promise of selling the car under R100k, despite the forex movement, since the pricing announcement in 2012.”

Datsun History

Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means ‘lightning-fast’ in Japanese but is also a reference to the three financiers who supported the business at the time – namely Mssrs. Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi – an acronym of the first letter of each name. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.

In 1933, Nissan’s founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of “mobility for all”.
